  • Naeem Akram – The Running Engineer
  • One reason, I love my work is that I get to meet a wide range of extraordinary people, doing all sorts of stuff, supremely well, with passion and I get to put their story across through my skill - photography. In this case I photographed Naeem Akram, the Running Engineer who one of Britain's top exponents of barefoot running as he trained in Clapham Common before giving a talk at Balance Performance Physiotherapy working with Henman Communications.

Naeem demonstrated his amazing fitness by climbing a lamppost with consummate ease and using it as an exercise accessory.

As the day progressed and the light changed, I was able to get some powerful images shooting against the sun and using flash to get some details in the shadows.

  • Warsaw Light

  • A stroll through Warsaw from Nowy Miasto to Nowy Swiat with my Leica M9 inspired by Bernardo Bellotto Canaletto.

On 29th March, after a day doing some business in Warsaw, I went for a stroll from my Hotel the Mamaison Hotel Le Regina, in Nowy Miasto and walked through the more famous Stary Miasto all in a straight line to Nowy Swiat, the Oxford Street so to speak of Warsaw. It was a cold sunny, cl0udy day, constantly threatening to rain ans snow!, but with spectacular clouds coming and going and the light changing every second.

My Leica M9 proved perfect at capturing this all and later processing the images in the latest version of Adobe Lightroom v4, I was able to squeeze every detail out. Whilst taking the pictures I always had in mind the famous paintings by Bernardo Bellotto Canaletto in the 1750's patronised by Stanisław II August Poniatowski.

  • Foster & Son Ltd. Shoemakers telling the story of bespoke shoes
  • As part of an ongoing project to chronicle the whole cycle of production of the making of a bespoke shoe, I recently spent a day photographing one of the shoemakers in the Foster and Son workshop, above their premises in Jermyn Street. Foster and Son have a continuous tradition reaching back over 170 years, they are one of the oldest-established custom shoe and boot makers in the World, with a reputation for fine "West End" style shoemaking. Foster and Son was founded in 1840.

All we covered on this day, was the creation of paper templates from an already completed last and the cutting of the leather for the uppers. other stages including measuring the feet, the creation of the last, the purchase of and tanning of leather, closing and final putting together of the shoe, have taken and will continue to take different photo shoots, in London, Essex, Devon and Northampton.

  • A boar shoot in the Mazury, Poland January 2012
  • In January I went to Poland just as the first snow fell, to photograph with my Leica M9 a boar hunt which will form part of a book showing a small part of this wonderful district in Northern Poland called the Mazury. We got up at 5am, had breakfast, then met the hunters, wardens & beaters in the Olsztynek car park where the rules of the shoot were explained and cards scheduling the position of each gun on each shoot were distributed, before driving off to near the first drive. On each occasion the horn was blown to signify the start and end of each drive.

At 11 we stopped for tripe soup with bread and at the end of the day as it got dark around 4pm  a barbecue with wild boar sausages, tea and vodka and the marking with blood of a successful shoot for a new member of the group. We had walked about 15km that day in -9 degrees C temperatures! We retired to one of the hunters houses where more vodka was drunk with many a tale of successful shoots and the odd one that got away!.

The following day I had time to photograph the snowy landscape. You can see more pictures in a slideshow.

  • Earth Laughs in Flowers LaChapelle at Robilant + Voena
  • On 13th February I headed off to the Robilant + Voena gallery where the charming Edmondo di Robilant hosted a "Reception for the Artist" at the launch of the Earth Laughs in Flowers exhibition which will also be in Milan and St Moritz with receptions on 15th & 18th February respectively.

I had photographed Edmondo in the gallery some time ago, with full studio flash and using PhotoShop made him an old master painting as well!

This time I took my Leica M9 and Leica Elmarit 21mm F2.8 lens and mingled with the crowd whilst David and several of the guests were interviewed for TV. The Leica captured the subtleties of the light from highlights to shadows and being small and nearly silent, did not intrude into peoples conversations or their enjoyment of the art.

You can see more of the pictures in a slideshow.
